No Track Tuesday #2 – RunLog May 26, 2020

Doing speedwork out in front of the house again today. I have a feeling that this is the way it is going to be for a while longer.

I was definitely slower than last week and I am okay with that. The weather has changed and it is was in the ’70s with around 70% humidity. Needless to say, I haven’t acclimated to those conditions yet, but I was able to do 2 more quarters than last time for 6 total and then got in 6 x .12 repeats.

Today, I knew it was going to be a tough workout from the outset. So I told myself ahead of time that I wanted to work more on maintaining good running form to the end of each repeat versus thrashing and trashing things to get the end of the intervals as quickly as possible. I worked hard to stay smooth and controlled during the hard intervals and think that it worked pretty well.

Sometimes it is not always about how fast you do an interval, but also if you were able to maintain good form all the way through to the end. I know that I can run pretty quick, but it isn’t always great form or pretty running and I am attempting to do better with it and see if making those small changes allow me to run better in the long run.

Quarter-mile repeats

  • 1 – 1:47 / 6:51
  • 2 – 1:53 / 7:14
  • 3 – 1:54 / 7:18
  • 4 – 1:53 / 7:14
  • 5 – 1:54 / 7:18
  • 6 – 1:52 / 7:10

All of those were faster than my last 5K split and fairly consistent, so I am pretty happy with the results. After #4 I had to take my glasses off I was sweating so bad. I am not a great hot weather runner and today was a great reminder of that, but I hung in there and finished the quarters and then moved on to the 200/0.12 repeats.

200s

  • 1 – 0:50 / 6:36
  • 2 – 0:56 / 7:24
  • 3 – 0:54 / 7:08
  • 4 – 0:57 / 7:32
  • 5 – 0:54 / 7:08
  • 6 – 0:53 / 7:00

I gotta be honest, I really didn’t want to keep doing these and came close to bagging it after the second one. I had to force myself to keep going and just toughed it out and even picked it up on the last two repeats.

  • Total Distance: 6.01
  • Total Time: 55:05
  • Overall Pace: 9:10 – which meant that my rest intervals were also a bit slower than last week.
  • Shoes: Skechers Razor 3 Hyper – They just didn’t feel like they had any snap to them at all in the heat. I have a feeling that they were actually fine, but I was so focused on form work and the heat was beating me up that maybe I didn’t have much snap in the legs either.

I knew when I started that this was going to be a sufferfest and it was.

These workouts where you keep going even when you have zero wish to keep going and finish the workout do develop mental toughness and that is something that I lack at times and am working to improve my ability to endure suffering a little more when I am running.

Running hard in the heat/humidity is not fun, but after I finished and started to look back at the workout and thought to myself.

You done good today.

One of the neighbors down the road, even told TheWife that “he’s really running fast today isn’t he?” I laughed when Mary told me that and thought to myself somebody noticed my work…then I thought now if I had only actually been running fast. πŸ™‚

A tough, but good run.
